Way Down Where De Coons Come From was published in 1896. The cover illustration is for the British edition. This and other songs of a similar genre were published in England, almost a half century after the Civil War and reflect attitudes, both in the United States and abroad, which ignored and abused  Afro-American  sacrifices on the battlefield in  pursuit of emancipation.
